Although I try to read as many books from my own publishers
as is humanly possible, sometimes I slip up and read something
else. This summer, I ordered a copy of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ book
from my local indie (Bookwarehouse on Main).
It’s a compelling letter to his 14 year old son, about being black in
America. Coates’ writing is fantastic, and the stories he tell are at
turns touching and horrifying, as he describes his own early life,
and the experiences he, and other black people have had. It’s a
short read, but that doesn’t make it any less difficult or rewarding.
