Class Assignments

Listen up, class!

No, I’m not about to assign you a project. That was SO 10 years ago, (10 years?!) I want to tell you
how excited I am about reading Love Letters to the Dead by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Very excited!
It begins as an assignment for English class: Write a letter to a dead person. Our protagonist chooses
Kurt Cobain because her sister loved him and because like her sister, Cobain died young. Now, I’m not usually
a reader of sad things. I like to keep my emotions repressed deep, down in the pit of my stomach where they
churn and bubble until they finally boil over into raw emotion to the lyrics of an Adele song. BUT I’ve decided
to challenge myself and read something out of my norm, (like that time I tried fantasy and fell asleep at the
sight of the first map). With LLTTD, I’ve heard positive reviews, people in my office tell me that it’s
actually uplifting, and I am coming out of reading my millionth Murakami book, which means I need to be
brought back to reality somehow.

Love Letters to the Dead

I will let you know how it goes. This could be good for me, maybe I won’t bawl my eyes out the
next time I hear Adele.
